Erie County Medical Center recently concluded a $12.5 million project to provide 22 inpatient, private rooms for orthopedic patient recovery and replace equipment in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab on the first floor. The lab will feature a comfortable and spacious review station for physicians and a system storage capacity of 15,000 cases, allowing for greater ease and convenience.

ECMC obtained state approval for the new space to meet growing demand for elective and joint-replacement surgery, offer a better experience for patients, and help recruit new orthopedic physicians.

The rooms, in two units, represent a redistribution of beds, and not an overall increase at the medical center. The renovation took place on the sixth floor, which previously housed skilled nursing patients who moved to the Terrace View Long-Term Care Facility on ECMC's campus. The project also includes a physical therapy rehabilitation area and space for patient pre-surgery orthopedic educational classes.
