Buffalo VA Medical Center Renovations

 Buffalo, New York

The Buffalo VA Medical Center opened in 1950 and provides medical, surgical, mental health and long term care services through a range of inpatient and outpatient programs. It is the main referral center for cardiac surgery, cardiology and comprehensive cancer care for central and western New York and northern Pennsylvania.

Beginning in 2012, the VA Medical Center underwent extensive renovations to the third floor, specifically in the Physical Therapy wing. Sienna Environmental Technologies conducted inspections for lead-based paint, as well as sampling for the removal of large amounts of asbestos-containing materials (ACM), including floor tiles and pipe insulation. The majority of this construction was done during off hours, so as not to disturb the staff or patients. Similarly, Sienna worked with the contractor in developing removal procedures that minimized the disturbances the abatement and disposal of ACM caused the staff during their typical operations at the medical center.

Sienna worked with TRM Architecture on this $50 million project and provided the following scope of work:

  • Provided Environmental Project Design Services for the abatement portion of the project
  • Conducted Asbestos Surveys including bulk sampling in accordance with the requirements of New York State Industrial Code Rule 56 and federal regulations
  • Conducted lead-based paint inspections per federal regulations
